Privacy Policy
PeerNotes is a collaborative thinking workspace for teams — available as a web app, a browser extension, and mobile apps. AI-assisted features help you develop and pressure-test your ideas. The PeerNotes browser extension ("PeerNotes Web Clipper") lets you save web pages, highlight text on any page, and bring those clippings directly into your workspace. This policy explains exactly what data is collected, where it goes, and how you can control it.

1. Data Stored Locally on Your Device
Browser Extension
The extension stores the following on your device only:
- Authentication tokens — credentials obtained after sign-in, stored in encrypted browser storage
- Saved page index — a local index of pages you have saved, keyed by URL, with the page title, a short excerpt, and a cached copy of the page's readable text and sanitized HTML so the extension can render previews quickly without a network round-trip. Highlights you create are stored on our servers (see Section 2), not in this local index.
- User settings — your extension preferences such as default highlight color and whether the highlighter is enabled
- Anonymous device ID — a randomly generated identifier used for analytics when no account is active; not linked to your email address and retained across sign-out
- Sync state — whether initial sync has completed and any pending sync errors
Signing out clears your authentication tokens, saved page index, and settings from the device. The anonymous device ID is retained.
Web App
The web app stores a small number of preferences in your browser's local storage:
- Last login email (for convenience on the sign-in screen)
- Theme preference (light/dark)
- Sidebar state
- Last viewed notebook
These preferences are not transmitted to our servers.
2. Data Synced to Our Servers
When you save a page, create a highlight, organize notebooks, or upload files, the following is sent to our servers over an encrypted connection:
- Highlight text — the exact words you selected and saved
- Saved page URLs and titles — the address and name of pages you choose to save
- Page thumbnail — a small preview image captured when you save a page
- Notebook and note structure — how you have organized your content
- Uploaded files — PDFs, images, and videos you explicitly upload
- Note content — text and other content you write directly in PeerNotes
- Collaboration data — email addresses of people you invite to shared notebooks (see Section 7)
The web app and mobile app maintain a persistent connection to our servers for real-time features such as collaborative editing and notifications.
We do not passively collect your browsing history, page content, or any data you did not explicitly choose to save.
Account and log data
- Account information — when you create an account we store your email address, first and last name, and (if provided) an avatar URL. Sign-in is handled as described in Section 4.
- Payment information — when you subscribe, our payment processor (Stripe) collects and processes your payment details. We receive limited billing information (such as your name, billing email, card brand, the last four digits of your card, and billing country) to manage your subscription; we do not collect or store your full card number.
- Log data — like most online services, our servers automatically record standard technical information such as your IP address, browser and device type, and request timestamps. We use this for security, debugging, abuse prevention, and keeping the service reliable. We do not use it to build advertising profiles.
3. Analytics and Cookies
We use Statsig to understand how features are used across the browser extension, web app, and mobile app. Statsig's Privacy Policy governs their handling of this data.
What is logged
We log feature usage events (such as saving a highlight, creating a bookmark, or completing an import), UI interactions, and authentication events (sign-in, sign-out, installation). We do not log the content of your highlights or notes, or the URLs of pages you visit.
How you are identified
In the browser extension, you are identified by an opaque account identifier that is not derived from, and cannot be reversed to, your email address — your raw email address is never sent to Statsig. When you are not signed in, the anonymous device ID described in Section 1 is used instead.
In the web app, your account ID and email address are sent to Statsig to support feature gating and segmentation. Statsig also stores its own cache and stable identifier in your browser's local storage. If you would prefer that your email not be sent, contact us.
Cookies and website analytics
We do not use advertising, marketing, or third-party tracking cookies on any of our surfaces.
- Marketing website (get.peernotes.io) — uses Statsig for privacy-friendly, cookieless analytics (page views and visitor counts). Statsig does not set cookies; it stores an anonymous random identifier in your browser's local storage. No personal data is collected.
- Web app — uses a single essential, encrypted, HTTP-only session cookie to keep you signed in. It also stores a few non-tracking preferences in your browser's local storage (see Section 1). Product usage analytics are handled by Statsig as described above.
- Browser extension — does not use cookies or advertising analytics.
4. Authentication
Sign-in is handled by a secure authentication service that we operate on our own infrastructure.
- In the browser extension, your session tokens are stored in encrypted browser storage and cleared on sign-out
- In the web app, your session is maintained via an encrypted, HTTP-only session cookie that expires automatically
- Password reset and email verification messages are sent on our behalf via Amazon Simple Email Service (Amazon SES)
5. Why the Extension Runs on All Pages
The extension requests access to all pages so that you can save highlights and bookmark pages anywhere on the web.
The extension does not:
- Read or transmit page content in the background
- Track which pages you visit
The extension only acts when you:
- Select text and choose to save a highlight
- Click the extension icon or toolbar to interact with PeerNotes
No page content is ever collected without an explicit action from you.
6. Third-Party Services
| Service | Purpose | What is shared |
|---|---|---|
| Statsig | Analytics and feature gating (all surfaces) | Anonymous ID (marketing site); opaque account identifier (extension); account ID and email (web app) |
| Amazon Web Services (AWS) | Cloud hosting, primary data storage, and transactional email (US) | Stores your account data and content (notes, notebooks, saved pages, uploaded files) encrypted in the United States; sends transactional emails via Amazon SES |
| Backblaze B2 | Object storage for revision snapshots and backups (US) | Stores revision history of your notes, notebooks, and saved pages, plus periodic backups, encrypted at rest |
| Canny (peernotes.canny.io) | Feature requests | You are redirected to Canny's site; no data is sent by PeerNotes |
| Third-party AI providers | Powering AI-assisted features | Content and inputs you submit to AI features, processed on our behalf to generate output for you; not used to train models. The providers we use may change over time. |
| Stripe | Subscription billing and payments | Name, billing email, and limited card details; full card data is handled by Stripe directly, under Stripe's Privacy Policy. |
We use third-party AI providers to power our AI-assisted features. Content you submit to those features is sent to the provider only to generate output for you; it is not used to train, fine-tune, or improve any AI models, and our AI providers are contractually prohibited from doing so. We may change or combine the AI providers we use over time.
We do not sell your data to any third party.
We may create and retain aggregated or anonymized data — which does not identify you or reveal your content — to operate, secure, analyze, and improve the Service.
7. Collaboration and Sharing
PeerNotes lets you invite other users as contributors or reviewers on notebooks and notes. When you add a collaborator:
- Their email address is stored on our servers to look up their account and grant access
- Removing a collaborator immediately revokes their access
If you have been invited as a collaborator, you can ask the notebook owner to remove you, or contact us directly.
8. Data Security
- All data is encrypted in transit using secure, industry-standard connections
- Personal and sensitive user data stored on our servers is encrypted at rest using strong, industry-standard encryption
- Session tokens in the browser extension are protected by your browser's encrypted storage
- Web app sessions use encrypted, HTTP-only cookies
- Access to server-side data is restricted to authorized Obtainable LLC (DBA PeerNotes) personnel
- In the event of a data breach affecting your personal information, we will notify affected users and any relevant authorities without undue delay, as required by applicable law
No method of transmitting data over the internet or storing data is completely secure, and although we work to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.
Where your data is stored
PeerNotes is operated and hosted in the United States, primarily on Amazon Web Services (AWS), with revision snapshots and backups stored in Backblaze B2 (United States). Your data is stored and processed in the United States. The Service is intended for users in the United States; we do not target it to users in the EEA or UK.
9. Data Retention
We keep your personal information only for as long as necessary for the purposes described in this policy — generally for as long as your account is active — unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law (for example, to comply with tax or accounting obligations, resolve disputes, or enforce our agreements).
When you delete your account, or ask us to delete your data, we remove it from our active systems within a reasonable period. Copies may persist in routine backups for a limited time until they are overwritten on our regular backup schedule, and we may retain limited records where required or permitted by law. Analytics data is retained according to our analytics provider's standard schedule.
Local device data is cleared when you sign out; session cookies expire automatically.
10. Your Rights and Controls
Sign out — immediately clears your session and locally stored data from your device.
Export your data — to obtain a copy of your highlights, notes, and notebooks in a portable format, contact us at info@peernotes.io. We will provide your data within a reasonable timeframe and in accordance with applicable law.
Delete your account — contact us at info@peernotes.io to request deletion of your data. We will respond within a reasonable timeframe and in accordance with applicable law.
Access or correct your data — contact us at the address above.
United States
PeerNotes is intended for users in the United States. Depending on your state of residence, you may have rights under state privacy laws — including the right to know what personal information we collect, to access it, to correct it, to delete it, to obtain a copy in a portable format, and to not be treated differently for exercising these rights.
California (CCPA/CPRA)
We do not sell or share your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. California residents have the right to know, access, correct, and delete the personal information we hold about them, and to not be discriminated against for exercising these rights.
Other U.S. states
Residents of states with comprehensive privacy laws — such as Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, Utah, Oregon, and Montana — have similar rights to access, correct, delete, and obtain a portable copy of their personal information.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at info@peernotes.io. We will verify and respond to your request as required by applicable law.
Do Not Track
Some browsers offer a "Do Not Track" (DNT) signal. Because there is no common industry standard for DNT, we do not respond to DNT signals. However, we do not use advertising or cross-site tracking on any of our surfaces (see Section 3).
11. Children's Privacy
PeerNotes is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with information, contact us at info@peernotes.io and we will delete it promptly.
12. Changes to This Policy
For material changes, we will provide reasonable advance notice (for example, by email or an in-product notice) before they take effect, and we will update the "Last Updated" date. Continued use of PeerNotes after the changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
13. Governing Law
This policy and any disputes arising from your use of PeerNotes are governed by the laws of King County, the State of Washington, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law provisions.
14. Browser Extension: Permissions and Chrome Web Store Compliance
This section applies specifically to the PeerNotes Web Clipper browser extension.
Single purpose
The PeerNotes Web Clipper has a single purpose: to let you save web pages, highlight text on any page, and bring those clippings into your PeerNotes workspace.
Permissions we request, and why
| Permission | Why we request it |
|---|---|
identity | Sign you in securely through our own authentication service using a standard OAuth/PKCE flow. We use this only to launch sign-in — we do not access your Google account, contacts, or other Google services. |
storage, unlimitedStorage | Store your settings, your local index of saved pages, and your encrypted session tokens on your own device. |
activeTab | Read the URL and title of the current tab when you choose to save it. |
contextMenus | Add the right-click "Save to PeerNotes" and "Highlight selection" actions. |
alarms | Clear the temporary save-confirmation badge from the toolbar icon a short time after you use the keyboard shortcut to quick-save a page. (MV3 service workers can be evicted before a setTimeout fires, so an alarm is used instead.) |
sidePanel | Display the PeerNotes side panel when you open it. |
Host access to all sites (<all_urls>) | Inject the highlighter so you can select and save highlights on any page. The extension only reads or transmits page content when you take an explicit action (saving a page or creating a highlight). It does not read page content or track which pages you visit in the background. |
Limited Use disclosure
PeerNotes' collection and use of information received from the browser, and from any Google APIs, adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Specifically:
- We only collect and use the data described in this policy, and only to provide and improve the features of the extension and the PeerNotes service, including through the service providers listed in Section 6.
- We do not sell your data, and we do not use or transfer it for advertising, ad targeting, or any purpose unrelated to the extension's single purpose.
- We do not allow humans to read your saved content, except where you give explicit consent, where it is necessary for security purposes (such as investigating abuse), or where required by law. Any internal analysis to operate or improve the Service uses aggregated or anonymized data only.
The categories of data described in this policy match the data we disclose on the extension's Privacy practices tab in the Chrome Web Store.
